Tony doesn’t care if it’s true. He doesn’t care if Steve does or will really love him, or what capacity they love is about. Friendship? Romance? He just needs to hear it. He can believe everything else on his own, mind supplying everything he needs. His eyes close as Steve finishes rinsing out his hair and leans in for a kiss as if that alone can sooth Steve’s fears. That’s not how this works, but if they’re in a fantasy of their own making, the main characters that will usher in the rest of the world towards a brighter future, then Tony is willing to play the part.
“There’s nothing to be scared of,” he says, which is more parental than he wants to be as he lowers himself back down on his heels. “If we screw something up, we’ll just try again. It’s going to work.”
Tony Stark doesn’t fail. And from what he’s seen from Steve, nothing the blond can actively controls fails either.
“We’ve got a magical hammer and a time machine suit and we have each other and all of that is completely crazy.” For some reason, that makes him grin. “That’s how I know we’ve got this.”
