Steve is visibly skeptical, though he refrains from expressing it verbally. There's something searching and dark in his eyes when he meets Tony's smirk, because they could be screwing this up. Tony could be his father's son, and Howard sure wasn't in a hurry to destroy the Cube after he fished it out of the Atlantic. In the end, though, Tony is the guy he's formed the most personal connection with in the modern world. Peggy is alive but there's a gulf of seventy years between them. Phil is great, but a stranger. Fury is...Fury. He and Tony aren't best buddies yet, but he can feel the potential. He's willing to take it on faith, because he has to be.
"You better figure it out fast," he says after a moment, as a last caveat. "Because there's gonna be at least three interested parties trying to track the stones. SHIELD, Thanos, and us."
He takes a breath. "We keep the scepter out of New York City, the gateway to the invading force won't be able to open. Yeah. I can get the scepter and hide it. I'll have to steal a plane; we're over water right now and I'm not interested in swimming down the East Coast."
Goddammit. He just volunteered to crash another fucking airplane, didn't he? Well, maybe if he fakes his death that will buy them some extra time to strategize. "They told me the stone in it can cause heightened aggression. I'll fake like I've snapped. They've been watching me for signs of instability anyway."
